2017 Fourth Quarter Report and Community Issues

The following issues were identified in the 2017 Community Pulse Report conducted by the the

Center for Marketing and Opinion Research as a Collaborative Poll Project involving local communities, government and the public. The research is an annual survey paid for by organizations based on the number of questions they ask about opinions and attitudes of Summit County and Akron residents on the trends in community needs and quality of life.

Among some of the major findings were:

ü     Substance Abuse/Heroin

ü     Government and Infrastructure

ü     Employment

ü     Crime and Safety Concerns

ü     Economic Concerns

ü     Education

ü     Housing

ü     Healthcare

Issues of Public Interest

WAKR-WONE-WQMX concentrated programs on the following ten issues for this quarter:

1.         The Opioid Epidemic

WAKR, WONE and WQMX devote resources to public debate, awareness and discussion surrounding the explosion of opioid use in our area, including heroin, fentanyl and other opioid addictive drugs. Programming focuses on addiction, addiction services, recovery and law enforcement interaction with those suffering from addiction as well as their families and the community in general. Programs include news coverage, special programming and interview segments with key stakeholders from law enforcement, social services, government and community groups as well as individuals and their families.

2.         Political Leadership

WAKR is an affiliate of the CBS Radio Network and occasional airs extended coverage of topical news and public affairs events. Air times and length varies. Coverage included LIVE network coverage of election results, presidential addresses, debates and breaking news coverage. Other programs include interview segments afforded to candidates on local ballots offered at no charge to the candidates to express their platforms and viewpoints.

3.         Public Infrastructure

Rubber City Radio Group WAKR-WONE-WQMX provides news converge and interview segments detailing debate and awareness of public infrastructure such as highways, road, water, sewer and electrical systems as well as airports and public facilities in the local community.

4.         Crime and Safety

WAKR-WONE-WQMX provides news coverage and interview segments detailing community relations with local police agencies as well as interactions of law enforcement and the judiciary with the community, including legal proceedings involving prosecution, defense and adjudication of legal matters.

5.            Economy and Jobs

Job creation and employment programs remain a key concern for residents seeking opportunities for themselves and their families to enjoy productive lives and remain active participants in community growth and development. Interviews and news coverage includes segments with key newsmakers including labor, business and community leaders.

6.            Education

WAKR provides coverage of local high school sports through interviews and sports updates, including the accomplishments of local student-athletes through regular features such as the WAKR Student Athlete (heard each Friday morning during the school year) and interviews are held with local school news-makers during the school year. WAKR also commits to regular interviews with local educators and the Akron-Summit County Library to discuss education outreach and programs.

7.                   Housing Development

With the community still recovering from the 2008-09 National and Regional Recession, the viability of housing stock, home values and foreclosures still rates high among our community as a key concern. WAKR-WONE-WQMX addresses this need through news coverage and interviews with local housing groups and agencies such as the Summit County Land Bank.

8.         Healthcare Reform

The access to affordable healthcare is still of critical concern, especially to those in disadvantaged communities either due to health or economic circumstances. Akron also serves as a major hub for healthcare services with the location of three major healthcare centers in the region through Akron Children's Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Akron General and Summa Health Systems. Coverage includes news coverage and interview segments.

9.         Race, Religion and Diversity

As part of our overall program outreach, WAKR airs programs originating from Grace Baptist Church, Haven of Rest, and other churches each Sunday. In addition, Temple Israel of Akron provides broadcast access during the year of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. These programs air around 90 minutes.

10.        Social Services

The WAKR Ray Horner Morning Show dedicates regularly-scheduled interview segments weekly with Vet on Your Pet, Dr. Joe Congeni, The Akron-Summit County Library, The Akron Foodbank, The United Way and other public service agencies providing services to disadvantaged individuals and families in the community. Among the outreach is the annual Summit4Kids event which targets at-risk families at the start of every school year to make sure children have supplies and medical check-ups.

In addition to the above ten issues, program coverage also includes partnerships with local agencies and groups supporting overall community development and healthy growth such as the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, the Jewish Community Center and others. WAKR-WONE-WQMX partners with these groups in both on-and-off-air activities and events.
