2017 Second Quarter Report and Community Issues

 

The following issues were identified in the Summit County Quality of Life Project conducted by the United Way of Summit County, the Akron Community Foundation and The University of Akron as part of the Thriving Community Needs and Assessment Study. Interviews of 183 individual “key informants” as well as 40 in-person interviews of county residents were conducted by the Federation for Community Planning.

Regularly Scheduled Programs

 

In addition to the programs listed stations also provided the following regularly scheduled news and community service programming:

 

WAKR News – 3:00 length local newscasts 5a-2p M-F at the top and bottom of each of each hour 5:30a-8:30a and top of the hour following CBS News 9a-2p. 

 

CBS News – airs on 1590 WAKR Newscasts are 6:00 in length with the exception of the World News Roundup at 8:00 a.m. M-F (10 minutes) and World News Roundup Late Edition 7:00 p.m. M-F (nine minutes). Network program.

 

WAKR Ray Horner Show – 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Monday-Friday and re-broadcast in a “Best Of” format 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Monday-Friday unless preempted by live sports programming. News, sports, weather, traffic, business and topical interviews of local, national and community interest.

 

WAKR Jasen Sokol Show – 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and re-broadcast 10:00 p.m. 12:00 midnight Monday-Friday and midnight-1:00 a.m. Tuesday-Saturday unless preempted by live sports programming. News, sports, weather and topical interviews of local, national and community interest.

 

WAKR Sam & Brad Show – 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and re-broadcast in a “Best Of” format unless preempted by live sports programming. Sports, weather and topical sports interviews of local, national and community interest.

 

Dave Ramsey Show - airs Monday-Friday 10:00 p.m. - 1:00 a.m. Unless preempted by live sports programming. Network program provides personal financial advice.

 

America in the Morning - airs on 1590 WAKR 5a-6a M-F with topical news, sports, business and information. 54:00 length. Network program.

 

Red Eye Radio – airs on 1590 WAKR 1a-5a M-F and 1a-6a Saturday and Sunday with up to the minutes news, features and talk. 54:00 length. Network program.

 

WONE News – 3:00 length local newscasts 6a-830a at the top and bottom of each hour weekdays.

 

WQMX News – 3:00 length local newscasts 5:30a-8:30a at the top and bottom of each hour weekdays.

 

Akron Weather Updates - all stations present weather updates at least every hour during live programming and break in to programming when severe weather events warrant.

 

Akron Traffic Updates - All stations: regular traffic and highway construction updates at least four times each hour on WAKR, WONE & WQMX during weekday mornings.

 

Need To Know: one-minute news, community service and public service reports airing on WONE during varied rotations seven days a week and during web streaming 24/7 on WONE.net.

 

Spectrum – produced by the RCRG Newsroom presenting in-depth treatment of local, regional and national issues. Some programs also include presentations of the City Club of Cleveland highlighting a wide range of programming. Airs on WAKR and WONE.

 

Forum 360 – produced by the Jewish Community Center of Akron in association with the Rubber City Radio Group, a 30-minute program airs each Monday morning at 12:30 a.m. on WAKR and Sunday at 6:30 a.m. on WONE at 5:30 p.m. on WAKR depending on sports schedules.

 

Community Profiles – produced by former Coming Together Akron President Dr. Fannie Brown and 1590 WAKR with information on programs and topics of interest to Akron’s minority community and the community as a whole. This program runs 30:00.

 

Center Talks – produced by the Akron Urban League and 1590 WAKR with information on agencies and programs of benefit to the Akron urban community. This program runs 30:00.  

 

Ready, Set Grow - on 1590 WAKR with host Tom Dayton offering advice for gardening and landscaping. Saturday 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. This program also airs Sunday evenings on a replay.

 

My Beautiful Home - on 1590 WAKR with hosts Katherine DeLong and Andy January with information on home décor and preserving value for homeowners. Saturday 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. This program also airs Sunday evenings on replay.

 

Jill on Money - program with advice by CBS financial and markets commentator Jill Schlesinger with consumer finance issues Sundays from 12p-2p and 6p-8p subject to blackout due to sports.

 

CBS Weekend Roundup - a 48:00 minute review of the week's biggest news stories. Program airs Sundays on WAKR.

 

CBS Face the Nation - a 58:00 program with news and debate originating in Washington, D.C. Program airs Sundays on WAKR.

 


Issues of Public Interest

 

1.         Economy

 

WAKR is an affiliate of the CBS Radio network and airs a close-of-market CBS Marketplace report at 5:30 each weekday; WAKR partners with Richard Peterson, president of Capital Financial Group, to present “Money Talks” airing Saturdays 7:00am-8:00am with topical news, interviews, and call-in advice on issues relating to personal economics. Each program contains a total of approximately 40 minutes of economic content in six segment blocks. WAKR also airs the “Jill on Money” program with advice on consumer finance Sundays from 12p-2p and 6p-8p subject to blackout due to sports.

 

2.         Education

 

WAKR provides coverage of local high school sports; the station also highlights accomplishments of local student-athletes through regular features such as the WAKR Student Athlete (heard each Friday morning during the school year) and interviews are held with local school news-makers during the school year. WAKR also commits to regular interviews with local educators and the Akron-Summit County Library to discuss education outreach and programs.

 

3.            Children's Services Issues

 

Rubber City Radio Group WAKR-WONE-WQMX is a supporting media outlet for Summit For Kids , an annual event produced by Summit County, Children's Services of Summit County, Summit County Juvenile Court.

 

4.         Political Leadership

 

WAKR is an affiliate of the CBS Radio Network and occasional airs extended coverage of topical news and public affairs events. Air times and length varies. Coverage included LIVE network coverage of election results, presidential addresses, debates and breaking news coverage. Other programs include State of the State, State of the City, State of the County and State of the Schools addresses. WAKR aired live election results until 4:00 a.m. On Tuesday, November 8 while WONE and WQMX had hourly updates through the evening until results were final.

6.     The Heroin Epidemic

 

1590 WAKR, 97.5 WONE and 94.9 WQMX aired intensive coverage August 22-26 during our regularly scheduled newscasts focusing on the Heroin Epidemic impact on our community, including one-on-one interviews with addicts, their families, those providing recovery and addiction treatment services, law enforcement, judicial, community activist, religious and political responses to the deadly and heart-breaking explosion of heroin and opioid abuse. Coverage included extensive online resources via a coordinated website http://wakr.net/heroin-epidemic hosted by WAKR but also via social media on all three stations. We also broadcast a special edition of The Jasen Sokol Show Wednesday, August 31 10:00a-2:00p from the Summit County Department of Health focusing on new programs 

 

7.         Race, Religion & Diversity

 

As part of our overall program outreach, WAKR airs programs originating from Grace Baptist Church, Haven of Rest, First United Methodist Church of Akron and other churches each Sunday. In addition, Temple Israel of Akron provides broadcast access during the year of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services. These programs air from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Coverage also includes Christmas Eve services of the Christian faith.

 

8.         Transportation

 

WAKR-WONE-WQMX provides weekday hourly traffic and road construction updates.

 

9.         Social Services Agencies

 

The WAKR Ray Horner Morning Show (each segment approximately 4:00 in length) includes appearances by Akron Bar Association attorneys as part of the Akron Bar Association’s outreach program. WAKR also provides weekly program segments featuring local veterinarian Dr. Gary Riggs and local animal shelter groups as a public service in the interest of encouraging responsible management and ownership of pets; regular visits with Master Gardener Jeanne Poremski with practical advice for homeowners on maintaining their property.

 

10.       General Health & Wellness

 

The WAKR Ray Horner Morning Show (each segment approximately 4:00 in length) includes interview segments produced in partnership with Akron General, Summa Health System, Akron Children's Hospital and local municipal and county health departments

 

 

 

 

RCRG Public Service Announcements

Need To Know is a :60 prerecorded public service announcement airing on an ROS (run of station) basis on 1590 WAKR and 97.5 WONE. A listing of the “Need To Know” topics covered in the Quarter are found at the bottom of this report. In addition, material may also be included on web pages profiling community events on www.wakr.net www.wone.net and www.wqmx.com for viewing by internet users. Community and public service participation by local air personalities and the radio station as well as public service and community announcements are administered by Rubber City Radio Group Marketing and Promotions Department.

May 8    Cuyahoga Valley Arts Center in downtown Cuyahoga Falls event with proceeds to benefit the Arts Center. Proceeds of over $3,000 donated. Promotion across all stations, Sarah Kay was the auctioneer. 

 

May 9    Go Red For Women to benefit women's heart health in partnership with the American Heart Association. WAKR/RCRG is a sponsor with on-air and online promotion across all stations. RCRG sponsored a country concert at the Tangier with net proceeds benefiting the Go Red for Women program with $7,231.84 donated.

 

May 10   WAKR Senior Lunch held at Todaro’s. The event included A great lunch, 42-some vendors with information & gifts geared toward Seniors, entertainment and door prizes. Two hundred and twenty seniors enjoyed the day. On-air and web promotion.

 

May 18   Student-Athlete banquet. This annual event, held at Todaro’s party center, honors all of the weekly WAKR Student-athletes (62 honored). The students, their family, friends and coaches are treated to a great dinner & gifts Two students received scholarships ($1,000 each) provided by sponsors of the program.

 

June 3   Pet Expo…16th annual event held at Hardesty Park in west Akron. Thousands of animal lovers stopped by and 122 animals were adopted. There were contests to find the cutest pet…. . WAKR/WONE/WQMX on-air personalities on hand promoted on-air, web, newspapers.

 

June 8   JCC Sports Dinner featuring Cleveland Indians owner Paul Dolan at Canal Park Ray Horner, emcee. RCRG sponsors included on-air interviews and promotion.

 

June 17   Vehicle Inspection, Shredding, Electronics. This annual free event was held in the front parking lot of our building (1795 W. Market St.). 226 cars went thru the process. On-air promotion, interviews, web, newspapers and on site. Partnered with Akron Police Department, S.C. Sheriff’s office, Ohio Highway Patrol and AARP.
