Second Quarter Report and Community Issues
The following issues were
identified in the Summit County Quality of Life Project conducted by the United
Way of Summit County, the Akron Community Foundation and The University of Akron
as part of the Thriving Community Needs and Assessment Study requested by
Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy. Interviews of 183 individual “key
informants” as well as 40 in-person interviews of county residents were
conducted by the Federation for Community Planning. A copy of this report is
attached to the appendix of this file.
Among some of the major findings were:
WAKR-WONE-WQMX concentrated programs on the following ten
issues for this quarter:
Regularly Scheduled Programs
In addition to the programs listed stations also provided

airs on 1590 WAKR hourly 6a-7p Monday-Friday and 7a-12p Saturday with the
latest financial and market information. 1:00 length. Network program.

12a-4a M-F; 7p-11p M-F; 12a-7a Saturday; 1p-11p Saturday; 12a-5p Sunday;
12p-11p Sunday. May be preempted by sports coverage. Updates every hour with

“America in the Morning” -
airs on 1590 WAKR 5a-6a M-F (starting September 8, 2009; 5a-5:30a up to that
point) with topical news, sports, business and information. 54:00 length.

Akron Urban League and 1590 WAKR with information on agencies and programs of
benefit to the Akron urban community. This program runs 30:00.
Community Profiles – produced
by former Coming Together Akron President Dr. Fannie Brown and 1590 WAKR with
information on programs and topics of interest to Akron’s minority community
and the community as a whole. This program runs 30:00.

WAKR
is an affiliate of the Westwood One/Wall Street Journal network and airs hourly
“Dow Jones Money Report” business updates Monday-Saturday.
WAKR

Community Outreach
As part of our continued
community outreach, RCRG works in partnership with various community groups to
both raise funds and help operations of non-profit charitable groups and profile
worthwhile community events. Among the initiatives for this quarter:
WAKR Second Quarter 2010
April 14: WAKR
Senior Luncheon at the Sheraton Suites…Lunch, prizes, vendors entertainment
for close to 200 people. Promoted on air and the web
April 27: Taste of Home at St. Joseph’s Center in Akron….750 people from over
six counties attended this yearly event which included a dozen vendors, prizes,
and a culinary specialist cooking for the crowd. Promoted on all three
stations, webs plus ANN.
May 10: Cuyahoga Valley Art Center Luncheon & Auction….85 people
attended this annual event that raises money for the art center. RCRG's Joyce
Lagios served as auctioneer. Raised $3,100. WAKR on-air and web
promotion.
May 11: Go Red For Women at the University of Akron. Over 800 women and a
few men attended this luncheon dedicated to providing women with information
for heart health. Included prizes and vendors. WAKR/WONE/WQMX and ANN were
media sponsors. Raised over $100,000.00
May 11: Project Homeless Connect.
This one day social and health services fair brought over 70 service
providers together at the The Chapel on Fir Hill to provide on spot services to
homeless individuals and families. Services included medical, dental, vision,
housing, legal, haircuts, showers, food, clothing & money. Station
participants included Nick Anthony, Mark Biviano and Tina Kaufmann.
WAKR/WONE/WQMX on-air promotion & webs plus ANN.
May 13: WAKR Student Athlete dinner at Todaro’s. Thirty athletes, their
families, friends & coaches attended. Athletes were honored on stage, given
trophies, sports bags. Four athletes honored as Student-Athletes Of the Year
with scholarships that totaled $4,000.
May 22: Akron Kidney Walk at Lock 3 Park. WAKR/WONE/WQMX and ANN ran promotional announcements for this event. Twenty on each station plus two weeks web.
June 5: Pet Expo at Hardesty Park. This free event, sponsored by WAKR/WONE/WQMX & ANN, attracted over 3,000 people. Close to 60 shelters (who had 80 pets adopted) and 52 vendors on hand. Entertainment, prizes, cutest pet contest. Promotion on all three stations, web sites and ANN.
June 18: United Way Day of Action. WAKR/WONE/WQMX staff worked with Barberton Historical Society for this annual event. On air promotion on WAKR/WONE/WQMX plus web and on-air interviews.
June 26: WITAN car wash, parking lot of the Akron Radio Center. Service agency Witan and families are sponsoring a car wash from 11am-2pm. On-air Promotion plus community page on web.
