2009 Fourth Quarter Report and
Community Issues
The following
issues were identified in the Summit County Quality of Life Project conducted
by the United Way of Summit County, the Akron Community Foundation and The
University of Akron as part of the Thriving
Community Needs and Assessment Study requested by Summit County
Executive James B. McCarthy. Interviews of 183 individual “key informants” as
well as 40 in-person interviews of county residents were conducted by the
Federation for Community Planning. A copy of this report is attached to the
appendix of this file.

May be preempted by sports coverage. Updates every hour with the latest news.

“America in the Morning” - airs on 1590 WAKR 5a-6a M-F
(starting September 8, 2009; 5a-5:30a up to that point) with topical news,
sports, business and information. 54:00 length. Network program.
WONE – 3:00 length local newscasts 6a-830a at the top and bottom of each
hour M-F.
WQMX – 3:00 length local newscasts 5:30a-8:30a at the top and bottom of
each hour M-F.
All stations: hourly weather updates (at least twice each hour on WAKR,
once hourly on WONE & WQMX)
All stations: regular traffic updates (at least four times each hour on
WONE & WQMX during morning drive M-F, six times each hour during morning

“Ready, Set Grow” on 1590 WAKR with host Tom Dayton

“Your Beautiful Home” on 1590 WAKR with hosts Katherine
DeLong and Andy January with information on home décor and preserving value for

Graduates of Akron Dinner, Guy’s Party Center. About 100 people attend this special
recognition event where a dozen Young Graduates of the Akron Public Schools
were honored in front of their family members, peers, teachers, and school
administration plus community members. WAKR is a sponsor of the program (one or
two students from each of the area high schools are given help during their
senior year. The program provides financial help so that students, who could
not afford, can participate in Senior activities, prom, rings, etc.

Heart Walk, University of Akron This annual event raised over $300,000 for the
programs of the American Heart Association.

dinner, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. This first time event had over 300
community individuals attend and $17,500 was raised to provide services to

3-5 Radiothon. Artists Luke Bryan &
Justin Moore performed a benefit concert Monday, December 7th as
part of the Tree of Lights, as WQMX takes donations to light up bulbs on a tree
on the front of our radio station building. Benefit concert tickets sold for
$30 and $15 donations. More than $35,200 was raised to benefit homeless and
other programs provided by Akron's Haven of Rest. On-air promos ran for 3
weeks, 8x per day = 168 and promotional support included a website presence for

18 Songwriters Showcase benefit concert;
admission to concert with a new unwrapped toy value of $15. Toy donations
benefited the Children Services Holiday Toy Room in partnership with Summit

November 15 Humane Society of Summit County, Tim & Christi host telethon to
raise money for the Summit County Humane Society. Helped raise thousands of
dollars of much needed money for the shelter and animals. 1pm-4pm.
November 20 Cancer Survivors at Lake High School, TK O’Grady and Karen
Wadsworth spoke to classes at Lake High School regarding cancer survival since
both are cancer survivors. 9am-3pm
November 20 Love, Inc. Coat Drive for Summit County, WONE ran promotional PSA
liners totally 50 over a 3 day time period, promoting the coat/cash drive.
