2009 Fourth Quarter Report and Community Issues

 

The following issues were identified in the Summit County Quality of Life Project conducted by the United Way of Summit County, the Akron Community Foundation and The University of Akron as part of the Thriving Community Needs and Assessment Study requested by Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy. Interviews of 183 individual “key informants” as well as 40 in-person interviews of county residents were conducted by the Federation for Community Planning. A copy of this report is attached to the appendix of this file.

“Dow Jones Money Report” - airs on 1590 WAKR hourly 6a-7p Monday-Friday and 7a-12p Saturday with the latest financial and market information. 1:00 length. Network program.

 

ABC News – airs on 1590 WAKR 12a-4a M-F; 7p-11p M-F; 12a-7a Saturday; 1p-11p Saturday; 12a-5p Sunday; 12p-11p Sunday. May be preempted by sports coverage. Updates every hour with the latest news. 3:00 midnight-5a, 4:00 6a-11p. Network program.

 

“America in the Morning” - airs on 1590 WAKR 5a-6a M-F (starting September 8, 2009; 5a-5:30a up to that point) with topical news, sports, business and information. 54:00 length. Network program.

 

WONE – 3:00 length local newscasts 6a-830a at the top and bottom of each hour M-F.

 

WQMX – 3:00 length local newscasts 5:30a-8:30a at the top and bottom of each hour M-F.

 

All stations: hourly weather updates (at least twice each hour on WAKR, once hourly on WONE & WQMX)

 

All stations: regular traffic updates (at least four times each hour on WONE & WQMX during morning drive M-F, six times each hour during morning drive on WAKR M-F; twice hourly on WAKR and WQMX during afternoon drive, once hourly during afternoon drive on WONE.)

 

60 Seconds/FYI: one-minute news, community service and public service reports airing on WAKR and WONE during varied rotations seven days a week.

 

Forum 360 – produced by the Jewish Community Center of Akron in association with Time Warner Cable of Akron/Canton, a 30-minute program airs each Sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. on WAKR and 6:30 a.m. on WONE.

 

Center Talks – produced by the Akron Urban League and 1590 WAKR with information on agencies and programs of benefit to the Akron urban community. This program runs 30:00.

 

Community Profiles – produced by former Coming Together Akron President Dr. Fannie Brown and 1590 WAKR with information on programs and topics of interest to Akron’s minority community and the community as a whole. This program runs 30:00.

 

“Money Talks” on 1590 WAKR with host Richard Peterson providing financial information on money management and financial policy. Saturday 7:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m.

 

“Ready, Set Grow” on 1590 WAKR with host Tom Dayton offering advice for gardening and landscaping. Saturday 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

 

“Your Beautiful Home” on 1590 WAKR with hosts Katherine DeLong and Andy January with information on home décor and preserving value for homeowners. Saturday 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

 

“Akron General Good Health Hour” on 1590 WAKR with host Dr. Debbie Plate offering topical advice and information on health issues. Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. Except when preempted by sports.

WAKR is an affiliate of the Westwood One/Wall Street Journal network and airs hourly “Dow Jones Money Report” business updates Monday-Saturday.

 

WAKR partners with Richard Peterson, president of Capital Financial Group, to present “Money Talks” airing Saturdays 7:00am-8:00am with topical news, interviews, and call-in advice on issues relating to personal economics. Each program contains a total of approximately 40 minutes of economic content in six segment blocks.

RCRG Community Outreach

 

As part of our continued community outreach, RCRG works in partnership with various community groups to both raise funds and help operations of non-profit charitable groups and profile worthwhile community events. Among the initiatives for this quarter:

 

 

 

WAKR and RCRG COMMUNITY EVENTS

October 3 Cavaliers Wine & Gold, University of Akron. This annual event, sponsored by WAKR/WONE/WQMX/ANN at the University of Akron, is free and open to the public.

October 8 Young Graduates of Akron Dinner, Guy’s Party Center. About 100 people attend this special recognition event where a dozen Young Graduates of the Akron Public Schools were honored in front of their family members, peers, teachers, and school administration plus community members. WAKR is a sponsor of the program (one or two students from each of the area high schools are given help during their senior year. The program provides financial help so that students, who could not afford, can participate in Senior activities, prom, rings, etc.

October 17 American Heart Walk, University of Akron This annual event raised over $300,000 for the programs of the American Heart Association.

October 24 Love INC dinner, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. This first time event had over 300 community individuals attend and $17,500 was raised to provide services to needy individuals in the Akron area. WONE’s TK O’Grady was the emcee and auctioneer. WAKR/WONE/WQMX/ANN were media sponsors.

November 7 Docs Who Rock, for the United Way of Summit County, E.J. Thomas Hall. This annual event showcases about two dozen musical groups that have to include a doctor or two in the group. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the United Way of Summit County. WONE’s TK O’Grady is one of the judges and WAKR News Anchor Marcy Pappafava contributes as a member of the board producing the event. WAKR/WONE/WQMX/ANN are media sponsors.

November 19 Goodwill Industries of Summit County-Vintage Styles, The Tangier. Over 300 people attend this annual event of food, auctions and a vintage clothing-style show with clothing from the Goodwill Industries stores. Twenty restaurants provided samples.  Local executives and workers at the Goodwill stores modeled the one of a kind clothing.  WQMX’s Scott Wynn & Sue Wilson served as emcees for the evening. WAKR/WONE/WQMX/ANN are media sponsors.

November 28 Akron Annual Welcome Santa Parade, Downtown Akron. With over 60 units and thousands of spectators, the annual Santa Parade took to the main street of Akron. Participating in the parade were on-air personalities of all three of the Rubber City Radio Group. Emcees for the parade and award ceremony were WONE’s Tim Daugherty & Christi Nichols. Media sponsors for the Parade and activities after were WAKR/WONE/WQMX/ANN.

Dec. 7-11 WAKR Share A Christmas Program for the Salvation Army of Summit County. The package for 2009 raised $10,000.This annual program raises money thru an on-air, morning show auction.

December 9 WAKR Senior Lunch, The Tangier. 250 senior citizens enjoyed a sit-down lunch, gifts from over 30 vendors, entertainment by the Friends In Harmony and door prizes. Event sponsored by 1590 WAKR.

December 18-31 Life Ride This annual program provides free cab rides for those who should not drive after holiday parties and celebrations. The rides are to the individual's home. Promotion is on-air, web and newspaper provided by sponsors and WAKR/WONE/WQMX/ANN.

WQMX TREE OF LIGHTS

December 3-5  Radiothon. Artists Luke Bryan & Justin Moore performed a benefit concert Monday, December 7th as part of the Tree of Lights, as WQMX takes donations to light up bulbs on a tree on the front of our radio station building. Benefit concert tickets sold for $30 and $15 donations. More than $35,200 was raised to benefit homeless and other programs provided by Akron's Haven of Rest. On-air promos ran for 3 weeks, 8x per day = 168 and promotional support included a website presence for three weeks.

 

WQMX CHARITY CONCERT SERIES

December 18  Songwriters Showcase benefit concert; admission to concert with a new unwrapped toy value of $15. Toy donations benefited the Children Services Holiday Toy Room in partnership with Summit County Children's Services Board. On-air promos ran for 3 weeks, 8x per day for a total of 168 times. WAKR is an affiliate of the ABC News Radio network and occasional airs extended coverage of topical news and public affairs events. Air times and length varies.

 

Special news coverage this quarter included comprehensive coverage of the H1N1 Swine Flu virus, including full online clinic schedules and updates from the Summit, Akron and Barberton Health Departments.

 

WAKR partners with Akron General Medical Center for the “AGMC Good Health Hour” airing Saturdays 11:00am-12:00pm with topical news, interviews, and call-in advice on issues of general health. Each program contains a total of approximately 40 minutes of health-related content in six segment blocks.
